Anniversary of the Death of St Augustine


At Canterbury in England, St. Augustine, bishop and confessor. He was sent there with others by Pope St. Gregory, and preached Christ's Holy Gospel to the English folk. He died there, glorious for virtues and miracles. His feast is kept on May 28.

Here seen being dispatched by Pope St Gregory the Great to convert the English.

Pray for the day that England will once again enjoy the fullness of the Catholic Faith.

Also the Feast of St Phillip Neri, whose Oratory came to England on the same Mission.

St. Augustine of Canterbury was received by my favorite obscure saint, St. Aethelberht of Kent, high king of the English. King Aethelberht, though married to a Christian princess, was himself an Odin worshiper, and received St. Augustine and his priests under an oak tree, in case they should try to cast a spell on him. After carefully considering the matter of Augustine's mission, the king decided to allowed him freedom to convert as many people as he could; the next year, the king himself was baptized.

St. Aethelberht and St. Augustine founded what would later become the See of Canterbury; St. Aethelberht also gave England her first written laws.
