Muslims dance in a Catholic Church

Recently dervishes have been whirling in the nave of a very well-known Viennese church. The parish priest saw it as an expression of hope and unity.

On Wednesday evening, Muslims were dancing in the Votive Church on the Vienna ring road. The Turkish Embassy publicised the event in a press release.

The spectacle is called the Mevlevi Sema ceremony.

The occasion was the 800th Birthday of the Persian-Islamic mystic Mevlana Celâleddin-i Rûmi († 1273). Rûmi is the founder of the Moorish Dervish Order.

Dervishes seek through asceticism, meditation and ritual dances to gain a pure soul.


The Vienna City Dean, the Right Revd Martin Rupprecht was enthusiastic about the event. The priest is committed to inter-religious dialogue. He also has studied for a year in Turkey.

For the Revd Rupprecht, it was "something very special", that he could welcome the Islamic group to his church. It was good to see that Muslims "experience spirituality" in a Catholic church.
This is for the priest is an expression of hope and unity.

The hypnotic-dance

The dancers were members of the Dervish Order especially invited from Turkey. Around 300 guests followed the presentation in the church.

The Turkish Ambassador to Vienna, Selim Yenel, gave the welcoming speech. He called the event "very special". He particularly praised "this environment".

Dervish founder, Rumi always preached tolerance of others. The word intolerance was not part of his vocabulary - according to the ambassador.

The symbolism of the dance.

The Dervishes dance in circular movements, that can last up to 45 minutes, in a trance. Each ceremony is led by a sheik.

At the beginning, the dervishes wear a red coat, which symbolizes "the centre of the earth".

They wear a red hat, like a tombstone and black capes, which are also connected to the memory of a grave.

During the prayer dance, the garments of the dervishes rise up.

They rotate in a circle, with the top right hand stretched up to receive the blessing of God.

The left points down to distribute the blessing received to the world.

When anyone joins the Catholic Church, the general idea is to leave your past life behind you or it is not a conversion in the proper sense. Blair is trying to spin his way in. Pity for him Campbell is not a Catholic, he would have been less blatent but would have spun on behalf of his master all the same.

For Blair's part, he should realise that entering the Catholic Church is not like getting a political agreement. You cannot make your own terms with the Catholic Church. That is Her glory.

If the Cardinal thinks he can accept Blair into the Catholic Church in some secret ceremony in his private chapel, without a public recantation of his known position on abortion, he has another think coming.

The Catholic clergy and laity do not lack the courage to speak clearly on moral issues and they will. The cries of their outrage will be the last sounds the Cardinal hears as he departs his office.

The Latin Mass cannot go on!

A believer, who takes part in the old Mass, needs a “solid liturgical education "- he also must master Latin.

The Administrator of the Diocese of Savona Noli has prohibited all Latin Masses in the Diocese.

The diocesan site also allows comment from the liturgist, the Very Revd. Andrea Grillo. He commented on the conditions for the celebration of the old Mass.

Revd Grillo especially focuses on the need for a "stable group" and the active participation in the rite:

"This means that a solid education and a liturgical knowledge of the Latin language is necessary and that this is Mass is not organized by a large number of invitees, as if it were a drama or a private act. "

Sociologist called Marx, new Archbishop of Munich

Translation of a German press report. But nothing to get concerned about! He is in fact a cigar toting conservative.

Reinhard Marx, Bishop of Trier is known as a theological conservative but one who is open to the people. The 54 year old ecclesiastic has the best prospects of succeeding Cardinal Wetter as Archbishop of Munich. Limburg also gets a new bishop.

For months in Bavaria and in Rome, possible successors to the Munich-Cardinal Friedrich Wetter (79) have spun around on the carousel.

Now it is rumoured in church circles that the Bishop of Trier, Reinhard Marx will move to the top of the largest Bavarian diocese. An official confirmation has not been forthcoming but the appointment seems likely soon. The ascent of the 54 year old Westfalian (known for his ‘baroque’ form- Cathcon note- pun on his size and beliefs.) has been rapid: Pope John Paul II appointed in 1996 the former professor of Christian social sciences to the Paderborn Bishopric and in 2001 to be the diocesan bishop in Trier, the oldest Episcopal seat in Germany. In Munich, Marx will not only chair the Freising Bishops' Conference (Cathcon: of the Bavarian Bishops), but also has prospects of being the successor to Cardinal Karl Lehmann at the head of the German Bishops' Conference. Before the Lehmann era, the Cologne and Munich archbishops alternated in this role. Furthermore, a Cardinal’s hat is only a matter of time. The affable churchman is quick-witted, discussion friendly and has no fears about the media. He has overseen administrative matters and pastoral care in the Diocese of Trier, while there was a divisive structural reform being implemented, and has on occasion rubbed people up the wrong way. At the same time, he sees himself as a "Merrymaker in the Faith", seeking "the witness of a happy and contented priest".

Marx likes a strong cigar and sip a good wine. Marx has long acted as a social expert in the German Bishops' Conference. Many anecdotes are associated with his surname. In the GDR era, he says, "the border guards were surprised by the “Christian Democrat Marx." When the professor, following the collapse of communism, held seminars in East Germany on Catholic social doctrine, he could not resist pointed remark:

"For 40 years have you been waiting for Marx. Well, he came and is a Catholic priest." According to media reports, the only remaining favorite in the Cardinal Wetter-succession stakes is not a nostalgic for redistribution of the "Heart of Jesus Marxist" type. His ideas about the reform of the welfare state in the direction of greater self-responsibility and subsidiarity are more neo-social and conform with the key messages of the new CSU-Basic Programme. His criticism of "inflated manager salaries" has been shared by the former Bavarian Minister-President Edmund Stoiber. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether and how Marx will continue the traditionally close relationship between the Catholic Church and CSU-lead state government. Theologically, ecclesiastically, and especially liturgically Marx thinks as a conservative. "We cannot depend on opinion polls to decide on what we believe," he says. And: "He who marries the spirit of the age, is tomorrow a widower (CS Lewis original Cathcon note)" When the Saarbrück priest and theology professor, Gotthold Hasenhüttl invited evangelical Christians to communion at one of the fringe events of the First Ecumenical Church Day in 2003 in Berlin (although this was forbidden), Marx was forced to intervene. As the responsible local bishop, he suspended Hasenhüttl from his offices. The professor had too demonstratively violated the good order of the church. Limburg also gets a new chief shepherd. Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst is to be the successor of Bishop Kamphaus.

While Protestants gave 100 percent vote to Hitler, Catholics just said no

An article in German detailing the story of two towns. One was the pride of Adolf Hitler. The other was Catholic.

All this supports in a specific case, the evidence that Catholics were the fiercest anti-Nazis in Germany.

Towns which were immediate neighbors in the Palatinate, but still in separate worlds: the Protestant Darstein all voted in 1930 for Hitler. But the Catholic Hauenstein had itself in March 1933, the lowest number NSDAP voters.

Darstein was by 1933 itself an Honorary member of the Nazi party, because the town was the first to vote 100 percent for the party. It was even reported in the "Hamburger Illustrated News."

He had long recognized it. Again and again, and since his schooldays, it had come to the ears of the 24-year-old in the area. "I belonged somewhere else, not in our village," says Dominic Stoffel from Darstein in the southern Palatinate, "for us it is more of a taboo subject." Now, from a recently published book, he has learnt the whole story of the situation back then in his village at the end of the Weimar Republic, with the upcoming fascism.

Darstein was in any case Adolf Hitler's pride, shortly after his assumption to power, the whole village even being an honorary member of the NSDAP, a feature even in the "1000 Year Reich." And the civil administration of Hitler's imperial capital Berlin also named a street after the town.

The dubious recognition of Darstein remained in place also in the GDR times and up to the present day. Although the background was no longer known: for the election to the Reichstag on 14 September 1930, all 106 voters of the 156 local inhabitants voted for the Nazis. Two and a half years before the takeover, when the free vote did not block the way to power. One hundred percent for the NSDAP. The first purely Nazi town in the Reich.

A village in the deeply God fearing Palatinate, which is known to Hitler. Is this because it is a further confirmation of popular images? Finally preached by Rolf Hochhuth decades ago, that the churches, especially the Catholic Church , are the true pioneers of fascism. And does this not fit with the overbearing Catholic Church built in Hauenstein in the 1930s, the larger neighboring village of Darstein with 4100 inhabitants. Gaudly built in the neo-Romanesque style, made of red sandstone, just as Hitler's architect appreciated? Inaugurated a good half a year after the beginning of the Nazi reign. But the truth lies elsewhere, it is the opposite.

Around 450 people crowded last Friday evening into the Parish Centre next to the proud church of Hauenstein. They wanted to be there, as the historian Theodore Schwarzmüller presented his new book, in which he tells how the times were just before and shortly after the seizure of power in 1933, in Hauenstein and Darstein. Many came from Hauenstein, but only a few only from Darstein.

Helmut Kohl, old Federal Chancellor, historian and from the Palatinate, giving the Laudatio, said in the auditorium, that the citizens of Hauenstein should be confident, given their history, and the children growing up there should have pride in their hometown.
"Hauenstein against Hitler" is the title of the Schwarzmüller book, "The story of a confessional outlook." Hauenstein residents were the answer to the Darstein residents in the record of history. In 1930, long before the seizure of power already, the very first village voting for Hitler in Germany could not have set so high a barrier: In the Reichstag election on 5 March 1933, as Hitler for five weeks was already Reich Chancellor and the Reichstag burned, as the henchmen of the regime now entirely legal raged throughout the country and all the opposition suffocated as a result, Hauenstein residents voted 92 percent for the joint list of the Centre and the Bavarian People's Party. It was on this day, in the whole Reich the highest result of a non-National Socialist party in locations of over 1000 inhabitants. The NSDAP remained at 4.8 percent. Darstein and Hauenstein, two neighbors. And yet, they were separated by more than the top of a mountain. They were throughout the Reich, at opposite poles in their relationship to National Socialism.

Two villages, which can hardly be more different
Both villages are different not only in size, but even more radically in their faith. The Augsburg Peace of 1555 turned the Palatinate into a religious patchwork quilt. Then as now an almost entirely Catholic Hauenstein, and Darstein completely Protestant. But Darstein, is a town without a church, every four weeks a secular village community hall being made available for a Protestant church service, with a visiting Pastor and a sparse congregation. In Hauenstein, on the other hand, says Parish Priest, Gerhard Kästel today, there are every Sunday around 800 believers at the Catholic mass. Kästel thinks this is too few.

But nevertheless, it was conciliatory that the new-Berlin resident Helmut Kohl reported that in the Capital which has Protestant majority, the church going is sparse. And religious instruction has been abolished in Berlin as a compulsory subject.

The Catholic workers and citizens as a bulwark against the Nazis

There is this tendency throughout the land of the secularization of the value system and the daily life of our time, the absence of church and faith. Theo Wieder, Mayor of Frankenthal, said on that evening, that the unanswered question was: "How would the structures of today support us if such temptations as the Nazis were in the neighbourhood. "

Anyone who reads the book from Schwarzmüller, recognizes the sensitivity of the matter. Meticulously the author details the many ways, almost exclusively, the strict Catholic workers and citizenship were the last bulwark against the Nazi fanaticism. And how, on the other hand, the Protestant neighbours provde to be so vulnerable to the radicalism . Historians have long recognized this as a continuous trend for the whole of Germany. Nothing however makes it so palpable, as Schwarzmüller’s approach, breaking down the details of the difference in two neighboring communities.

Little prosperity radiates the two valley villages of the Palatinate Forest. The squat solid houses with small windows, truss or natural stone, they tell us that only from hard work and thrift could they have been built It was a time when no one thought that a half-century later as the tourist trade came up that today some euros would flow into the valleys. The shoe factories emerged at the end of the 19th century in Hauenstein in dozens that the "shoe village of Germany" attracted the small farmers from their low wages in the labour market

Bismarck's struggle against the Pope

This was about the time when the Catholic cohesion on the confession of faith, but also in the Palatinate his first Stählungen learned. A Priest, 42 years in office
The man, who in 1915 came as a priest to Hauenstein, was certainly not a compromiser: Georg Sommer, now a Hauenstein legend. Believe it or not, he remained in that post 42 years, until 1957. He was diligent in his care for his Catholic lambs like no other, under the sky of the Palatinate. In a way, admittedly, about which even Helmut Kohl must say today: "Sommer, in the exercise of his power was directly behind the Pope," which would be "for the youth of today in Hauenstein unbearable."

In the cinema, the Parish Priest put his Calabrian hat in front of the projector when it came to kisses. Boys with long hair were no longer tolerated in the village. Not only did denominational mixed marriages fell under his gaze but also childhood friendships.

The current mayor, Bernhard Röding, remembers the day Fr Summer knocked at his parents door, to prohibit him meeting with a Protestant boy. Röding, the first mayor from the German Liberals, thinks Sommer downright evil that he "forced many young people away from the village where their development was inhibited." And the author Schwarzmüller clearly sees a certain symbolism in Summer’s death in the historic year of 1968.

When the Nazis came - ringing the bells

Or, in between, just into National Socialism. In the whole country during the 20th century exchange rapidly between right and left - also with the involvement of social democracy-far greater than the changes, underlying the centre. It was no different in Darstein, where after the war, the SPD could be of considerably greater influence than in Hauenstein.

Today, long-serving conservative politicians in Christian Democratic Hauenstein quickly come to speak about their memories, as they are in the post-war period when there were regular political punch ups with red Darstein at election time, for instance in the protection of their own or the elimination of opposition election posters. Or how the image of Willy Brandt in 1966 in Darstein was backed with an axe -political skirmishes with a confessional background.

And then came the NPD
In the sixties, Darstein forgot temporarily Social Democracy, and turned again to the NPD (neo-Nazis), with an almost absolute majority: 46 percent. Today there is again a left-wing hegemony. Right, left fast-changing, perhaps, the Darsteiner Dominic Stoffel, active in the Young Christian Democrats is right when he sees his home community simply as apolitical, including its elected mayor. How fast and how easy it is to fill a ballot, he says.

Unpolitical says one. Pastor Sommer would perhaps have rather the highlighted the unchristian, in a community with no church left in the village, but only a very secular community hall. Perhaps both are true.

Moderate disobedience in Linz

The Orthodox Church has put a dampener on hope

In recent years, the Orthodox Church has protested primarily against the establishment of four Catholic dioceses in Russia.

Catholics and Orthodox have made initial progress this month in the thorny question of a "primacy of the Bishop of Rome-the Pope taking precedence among Christian patriarchs. They wish in the near future to talk specifically about what this primacy means in the Universal Church. The question of "hegemony" of the Bishop of Rome is regarded as a major obstacle on the way to a new unity of the Orthodox Christian Churches and the Roman Catholic Church.

In response to the publication last July of Pope Benedict XVI’s Apostolic Letter, “Summorum Pontificum,” by which the Holy Father allows for and promotes a wider usage of the liturgical books in force in 1962, we began celebrating this Mass here at St. Therese this past September 16. Originally, it was to be celebrated on the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays. However, as of now, we will now be able to have the traditional Latin Mass of 1962 offered here at St. Therese Church EVERY SUNDAY at 1:00 p.m.

France is seeing an explosion of traditional religious communities, says Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis.

We are often told that the Church has to modernise, because the young, especially, can no longer relate to its teachings. It is sometimes even suggested that we should be grateful for a decline in vocations to priesthood: could this not be a sign from the Holy Spirit that the age of the laity is finally dawning?

This eagerness to make a virtue out of a necessity finds its most radical conclusion in a booklet entitled Church and Ministry published in the Netherlands by a group of Dominican academics. One of them, Fr André Lascaris, recently explained his thesis in the Tablet.
Numbers of vocations to the priesthood in Holland are plummeting, and according to Fr Lascaris there is “no hope of a remedy for this situation”. Apart from his own remedy, of course. His proposal is clear and simple: “In the absence of ordained priests, lay persons should be allowed to celebrate the Eucharist.” He adds: “Whether they be men or women, homo or heterosexual, married or unmarried, is irrelevant.”

The beauty of all this, according to Fr Lascaris, is that it is “based on the statements of the Second Vatican Council, and on publications of professional theologians and pastoral experts”.

Did the Second Vatican Council really say that? Are we really supposed to believe that the Holy Spirit deliberately manufactured a crisis in vocations, just to make way for the establishment of a new age of laity?

Of course, we laity have an essential role in the Church’s evangelisation. We have the awesome responsibility of carrying the message of Jesus Christ to our contemporaries who are searching. If falling vocations force us to acknowledge this, and to act on it, then the Holy Spirit will indeed have brought much fruit from any current crisis.
But perhaps Fr Lascaris’s Brave New Church of feminists concelebrating Mass in rainbow-coloured jilabas is not the only remedy to declining numbers of priests. A beautifully illustrated new book on the religious life in France suggests that there might be another solution. Reading the two books side by side you might be forgiven for assuming that the authors belong to two completely different religions.
If the photographs in Les communautés traditionnelles en France are anything to go by, then just across the Channel there lies a whole rich seam of Catholic religious life that is young, vibrant and growing.

The Little Office of the Virgin Explained

HOW far has it pleased God to reveal that it is His Holy Will to be worshipped by such prayers as constitute our Office?


God Himself divinely appointed two ways in which He was to be approached in public worship—by sacrifice and by vocal prayer. In the Mosaic ritual almost all was sacrificial, and very little vocal worship was prescribed. But in Samuel's time we find the Choir Office established. Prophecy, in its primary meaning, signifies the recital of God's Praises. This, then, was the duty to be performed by the companies of persons called the Sons of the Prophets, and here also is the first intimation of synagogue worship. In David's time we find vocal prayers united with the sacrificial worship in the Temple. Drawing near to the period of the Incarnation, more vivid signs of the Eternal Word may be expected. On the return of Judah and Benjamin from Babylon, Ezra re-arranged the services, while the ten tribes, scattered throughout the world, carried their word-worship with them.


This, then, was the state of things at the coming of our Lord. And when Christianity emerged from Judaism, it brought with it both word-worship and act-worship; the word-worship modelled to a great extent on the Jewish Offices, the act-worship (since the institution of the Holy Eucharist) necessarily combined with words.

The Acts of the Apostles prove very plainly that the first Christians, although " breaking bread " daily at home or in an upper chamber, also resorted daily to the Temple prayers and frequented the worship of the Synagogue. Alzog (vol. i., p. 119) tells us that although they frequented private houses for prayer, they did not cease either to hold open communion with the Jews or to attend at the Temple until after the fatal day when the predictions of our Lord were fulfilled, Jerusalem destroyed, and the Temple demolished. Then the Church freed herself for ever from the shackles of Jewish rites, and became a distinct, definite, and visible society. The prayers of the Jewish Church would, however, naturally serve as a model for those of the primitive Christians when scattered by persecution beyond the limits of Jerusalem and Judea.

This early form of worship which the primitive Christians took part in and carried with them would most probably consist of—
The Singing of Psalms, Heading of Holy Scripture, Exhortations, and Common Prayer.
To this would be added, on the Lord's Day, at least, (he Eucharistic Sacrifice, and the vocal prayers would fit around this central act of worship.


Pliny the Younger, writing to Trajan, says of the Christians in his province of Bithynia that they were a law-abiding folk, and did no harm ; their only peculiarity being to meet early on the morning of the first day of the week and sing hymns to Christ as to a God. Thus, Lauds, the song of praise at daybreak, and Vespers, the even-song, were to consecrate to God the whole day, the beginning and end : To Thee do I watch at break of day (Ps. lxii. 1); Let my prayer ascend to Thee, 0 Lord, as an evening sacrifice (Ps. cxl. 2).


The origin of the different Hours of the Office, stretching back as they do to the very birth of Christianity, would naturally be expected to be involved in obscurity and doubt. Happily for us, however, we have the Apostolic Constitutions, a precious authority dating from the end of the second, or at the latest the third, century, and attributed by some to St. Clement of Eome, which makes all clear and precise. It says: " Have Prayers in the morning at the third hour (Terce), the sixth (Sext), and the ninth (Xone), in the evening, and at cock-crow. In the morning, to give thanks to the Lord for having dispelled the night and brought the day to enlighten us ; at the Hour of Terce, because it was at that hour that Christ was condemned by Pilate ; at the Hour of Sext, for it was then that He was crucified; at the Hour of None, because it was at that hour that Nature was moved to horror by the audacity of the Jews, and could no longer bear the sight of the outrage wrought by them on the crucified Saviour. In the evening thank God for giving us the night in which we may rest from the day's labours; and at cock-crow pray because that hour heralds the arrival of the day during which we ought to do the work of light. If, on account of the unbelievers, it is impossible to go to the church, Bishop, you will assemble the faithful in some private house."

Dom Gueranger, in his Institutions liturgiques, tells us that Tertullian and the Latin Fathers attest the same practice in the West. Tertullian says : " Since we read in Luke's Acts that Terce is that hour of prayer when the Apostles, filled with the Holy Ghost, were thought by the Jews to be drunk; and that the Hour of Sext is that in which Peter went to the upper part of the house ; and that the Hour of None is that in which, accompanied by John, Peter went into the Temple—do we not see in this, besides what we are told elsewhere, to pray always and in all places, that these three hours, so remarkable in human affairs, occupied a more solemn rank in the Divine Prayers?" Farther on he uses the word Officium, Office, to designate the ecclesiastical prayers used at these hours.

Side by side with the great Divine Office we find a lesser Office of similar construction, that of the Blessed Virgin. Its history is obscure. St. John Damascene, in the eighth century, is said to have used or composed it; and in the same century the Benedictine monks of Monte CJassino appear to have been bound to say the Hours of this Office after, and those of the Office of St. Benedict before, every day and night Hour of the Divine Office. Cardinal Bona assures us that there was kept at Rome a manuscript Commentary on the rule of St. Benedict, written by Peter the Deacon, in which it is stated that Pope Zachary en­joined on all Benedictine monasteries to recite the Office of the Blessed Virgin along with the Divine Office each day. It is said that Pope Gregory II. was the first to institute this Little Office. So that it must have been in use about 720. (Thomassin, the Oratorian.)


In the ninth century the custom of consecrating the Saturday in honour of our Lady became fairly general- in the Church. On that day Mass and the Divine Office were celebrated in her honour. We are informed that Alcuin, that illustrious son of the glorious Patriarch St. Benedict, exerted much influence in propagating this devotion, and introduced it into many monasteries.
In the eleventh century this Office was in general use all over the Church, thanks particularly to St. Peter Damian, whose zeal in this matter was unbounded. Pope Urban II. and the Council of Clermont were the first to impose this Office as an obligation; for in appealing for Crusaders for the Holy War, all Ecclesiastics were asked to add this Office daily to the Great Office, so as to secure the help of our Lady in the holy enterprise. In the fourteenth century the obligation of the recital of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin was firmly established, but a decree of the Council of Trent (1563) released clerics from this obligation.


In days of old the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin was the favourite devotion among all who could read. In fact, it was from the Book of Hours containing the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, that children were ordinarily taught to read. The examples of some cele­brated personages may well be cited. St. Louis, King of France, said it daily, and caused his children to do like­wise. St. Antonine, Archbishop of Florence,,St. Edmund, St. Vincent Ferrer, Ven. Alphonsus Rodriguez, and many others, recited it daily on their knees. St. Ambrose of Sienna knew it by heart at the age of seven. St. Margaret of Hungary, St. Isabella of Portugal, St. Catherine, St. Bridget of Sweden, and especially St. Frances of Borne, experienced great consolation in its recital. We read of St. Gertrude that one day our Lord told her that no devotion pleased Him better than the devout recitation of the Hours of the Office of His Blessed Mother. The unfortunate Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland, comforted herself in her long and dreary captivity by the pious recital of the Little Office, and even on the scaffold she used her Book of Hours to recommend, for the last time, her soul to Christ and His Holy Mother.


There is abundant evidence to show that in old Catholic times the laity as well as the clergy were accustomed to recite daily the Office of our Lady; and it is clear, too, that they learnt it in their childhood. They were so familiar with it that they could say it by heart, and even recited it together while dressing in the morning. Thus, in the Book of Courtesay, printed by Caxton about 1477, Little John is admonished :
" While that ye be abouten honestly To dress yourself and do on your array, "With your fellow well and tretably Our Lady's Matins look ye that ye say."


Similarly, the statutes of Eton College, founded by Henry VI. in 1440, prescribe that the scholars, as soon as they have risen, and while making their beds, shall say the Matins of our Blessed Lady.

In a report on the state of England made by the Secre­tary to the Venetian Embassy in 1496-97 occurs the follow­ing picture of our English forefathers: " They all hear Mass every day, and say many Paternosters (Rosaries) in public, the women carrying long strings of beads in their hands, and whoever is at all able to read carries with him the Office of our Lady; and they recite it in church with some companion in a low voice, verse by verse, after the manner of Religious."
Even when tyrannous laws had forbidden all invocation of our Blessed Lady, devout Catholics would sometimes meet together in secret to recite the Office of the Blessed Virgin. Of this we have a proof in the register of criminal proceedings after the second unsuccessful rising in the Northern Counties in 1569. Thomas Wright, Vicar of Seaham, had to confess that he said daily in his house, with certain others, the Office of the Blessed Virgin. This poor priest had evidently conformed to the new order out of fear, and was probably hoping for better times, should Elizabeth die.

A Curial bishop has specified the causes of the current ecclesiastical crisis : Hand Communion, the abolition of Communion benches and kneelers , the removall of Tabernacles to another part of the Church and laity at the altar.

The secretary of the Congregation Roman liturgy, Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith, is currently giving a spate of interviews. On 16 November, he spoke with the missionary news service 'Fides'.


He said that the Papal Motu Proprio for the liberation of the Old Mass opened the way to a "complete integration" of the followers of Archbishop Lefebvre. This was an important, "as in the past often incorrect judgements were thought necessary, which now have lead to almost insurmountable divisions in the Church." The Archbishop sees the freedom of the old Mass as an explicit attempt of the Pope, to correct views that the Council was a break with the past and as a complete fresh start.

Ranjith also sees the release of the old Mass as a result of a "growing demand" for the old Rite.

In connection with the Motu proprio, the Archbishop specifies a crisis of obedience towards the Holy Father. There were some among the clergy-even in the highest ranks church- who have taken a "position of autonomy ". He cites the example of the Bishops adopted in certain countries implementing provisions for the Motu proprio which has gone against or distorted the intention of the pope . Such action is contrary to the dignity and majesty of the the Episcopal vocation.

Msgr Ranjith admits, that some directives of the post-Conciliar liturgical reform damaged parts of the liturgy But that was not the intention of the council.
The former Cardinal Ratzinger, referred to the so-called "spirit of the council" as a true "pernicious Conciliar ideology;"

The conclusion of the Archbishop: "Progress is good, but not at the expense of history or without history." Nevertheless, the Archbishop was clear that the post-Conciliar reform was "not on the whole" negative : There were many positive aspects.

Misused hand Communion

As a negative example of Archbishop cited hand Communion. . It was introduced so as to be an abuse. Now despite harmful effects on the faith, it is maintained.
The hand Communion, "in a certain way" has helped ensure that the belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist had waned:

"This practice, and the abolition of Communion benches before the sanctuary and kneeling benches in the Churches and the introduction of practices, which the faithful force during the consecration to sit or stand, diminish the true meaning of the Eucharist."

The Archbishop also regrets that the Church is misused as a hall for fraternal meetings, concerts or interfaith celebrations :

"In some churches, the Blessed Sacrament is almost hidden or banned to a barely visible and meanly decorated chapel ." All this overshadows the central beliefs of the Church of the real presence of Christ in the sacrament.


As a further error designate Msgr. Ranjith specified the blurring of the specific roles of the clergy and laity at the altar: "The sanctuary will be a place of confusion."

The introduction of dances, musical instruments and singing , with little liturgical sense belong to the liturgy and the church interior "in no way".

Finally, the archbishop criticized "certain sermons, of a political character, and often poorly prepared."

Poland. The Polish Bishops' Conference have criticized a so-called ban on discrimination against gays in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. This was in a statement after its plenary meeting on Thursday in Czestochowa. The bishops regret the other absences in the Charter of a reference to God and an abortion ban. The Archbishop of Gniezno, Msgr. Henryk Muszynski (74), said that the sodomy will never be tolerated. Tolerance also means respect: "A Catholic has no respect for any errors, sins and weakness."

John Henry Crosby is determined to revive interest in the thought of philosopher Dietrich von Hildebrand.

First persuaded by von Hildebrand’s reasoned arguments for the necessity of beauty, Crosby soon was caught up by the story of the philosopher’s heroic fight against Nazism and communism and his suspense-filled flight to freedom. The notion of a “brave philosopher” willing to put his life on the line for the truth inspired him.
“I’ll be involved with this until the day I die,” said Crosby, 29.
His enthusiasm for von Hildebrand is shared by none other than Pope Benedict XVI. As a priest in Munich in the 1950s, Father Joseph Ratzinger attended one of the lectures von Hildebrand often gave on his summer visits to Europe. The subject was “beauty.”

“The joy and freshness of [von Hildebrand’s] understanding of Catholic doctrine were contagious,” Cardinal Ratzinger wrote in 2000 in the foreword to The Soul of a Lion, Alice’s von Hildebrand’s biography of her late husband.

Cardinal Ratzinger believed the “transcendent beauty of truth” that had captured von Hildebrand’s heart was the “same love for the beauty of truth” that later led him to embrace and defend the magisterium’s teaching on birth control. He did so in a small volume originally titled The Encyclical “Humanae Vitae:” An Essay on Birth Control and Catholic Conscience, reprinted by Sophia Institute Press as Love, Marriage and the Catholic Conscience (currently out of print).

Characterizing von Hildebrand as “a man captivated by the splendor of truth,” Cardinal Ratzinger wrote: “I am personally convinced that, when, at some time in the future, the intellectual history of the Catholic Church is written, the name of Dietrich von Hildebrand will be most prominent among the figures of our time.”

Oldest Parish in Ft. Madison Closes It's Doors

The doors of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Madison are now closed. The final mass was celebrated Saturday night, November 17, ending the oldest parish in Fort Madison. Bishop Martin Amos and other priests celebrated the evening mass. St. Joseph's Church merged with St. Mary's Church in 1996. Archbishop Marini describes the idea of the Consilium to implement the constitution on the Sacred Liturgy in an extract from his new book, which is to be launched in the Palace of the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster in December.

The Liturgical Press also published the greatest gift for those who are unable to sleep, the memoirs of Marini's master, the evil Archbishop Annibale Bugnini, see Cathcon passim. This I purchased them for 5 dollars in a spring sale. A book that scales the heights of self-justification is never going to sell well.

The latest offering from Marini is not written out of love for the Church but rather anger, as everything that he has stood for throughout his career slowing disolves before his eyes.

The title comes from Bentham's comment that natural rights are nonsense on stilts.

Ok, it was the Bishop of Linz in 1937, Monsignor Gfoellner, who attacked the Liturgical Movement in ringing terms:

The Liturgical Movement exhibits ever and again regrettable aberrations.

One of the deviations was the prohibition of saying the rosary during Holy Mass. The "Monitum" goes on:

Such efforts must be openly and severely disallowed. Accordingly, the following strict instructions are being issued for secular and regulär clergy without exceptions:

The praying of the holy rosary dare not be crowded out of the Holy Mass as an "unliturgical" prayer; on the contrary, there is hardly a Catholic Mass-devotion which in such a concise, piain, and populär manner renders dear the nature and the meaning of the Holy Mass as just this prayer of the rosary. The Holy Mass is the mystical representation and renewal not of the suffering alone, but of the entire redemptive life . . . mysteries which are commemorated in the three-fold rosary. If for the month of October Leo XIII specifically prescribed the holy rosary during the Holy Mass, no Liturgical Movement has the right to crowd it out of the Mass.

The circular letter of the episcopal members of the Fulda Conference Said of those who combatted certain forms of devotion solemnly approved by the Church, such as devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the holy rosary, the confession of devotion:

Mediator Dei again castigates those who are harsh on the exercises of piety; the old emphasis on the merits of the Mass is quite apparent:

Who, then, would say, on account of such a prejudice, that all these Christians cannot participate in the Mass nor share its fruits? On the contrary, they can adopt some other method which proves easier for certain people; for jnstance, they can lovingly meditate on the mysteries of Jesus Christ or perform other exercises of piety or recite prayers which, though they differ from the sacred rites, are still essentially in harmony with them.
